Petco and Petsmart have relationships with local shelters and rescues (generally for cats, dogs and sometimes small pets like rabbits); if a pet is returned to the store, it will be sent back to the originating organization, which will determine the next best avenue to get the pet adopted.
Will Petco take animals back?
Petco does not sell cats or dogs. If you get a cat or dog from Petco you did not purchase it, you adopted it from a local rescue. Either way, Petco’s policy is not to turn away an animal it has adopted or sold out. If you cannot keep your rabbit for example, Petco will take the animal back and try to rehome it.
Can you return animals at PetSmart?
If you’re not satisfied with a product purchased in the store, simply bring the product in its original packaging and in new or salable condition to any PetSmart store to be returned.
Does PetSmart take hamsters back?
Petsmart will either put the hamster back up for sale after a short quarantine period and vet visit if necessary or adopt them out if they were brought back for a behavioral or health reason.
What do pet stores do with unsold hamsters?
If a hamster stays at the store more than 6 months it would either be transferred to a new location or adopted out (free). Even if the hamster is aggressive or has health issues that don’t hurt quality of life, most stores would rather find a home than euthanize. The (good) employees do care about them, after all.

Edit: If they were not purchased from us then we can not do a return but we can take them from the owner and put them in the back and place them up for adoption and not resale. We will put up information of the animal and they will remain in the back until adopted.
